Capturing in crisp phrasing the helpless desire, burning longing, and exhausted surrender to the beloved. Jan 21, Jon Corelis rated it it was amazing Shelves: five-star-poetry-books. Dimock, Jr. The poetry is clear, lucid, vivid, and a splendid example of artless art; it is great erotic poetry as well as great devotional verse.

This is one poetry book that I'd recommend everyone have in their library. With a useful introduction and notes, and and attractive wood-block style illustrations. May 27, Ivan Granger rated it liked it Shelves: hindu-yogapoetry.

I wanted to love this collection, but I will settle for liking it instead. Even with a great poet like Denise Levertov as one of the translators, I have to say these English renderings don't quite soar the way they clearly want to. Still, it is a good selection of Krishna bhakti poems.

I'd give it a modest recommendation, particularly to Krishna devotees. Dec 06, Nicole rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Anyone with an interest in Hinduism. Recommended to Nicole by: The proffessor that taught Hinduism in college.

  • In Praise Of Krishna Songs From The Bengali, The padavali poetry reflects an earthy view of divine love which had its roots in the Agam poetry of Tamil Sangam literature BC— AD and spread into early medieval Telugu NannayaAnnamayya and Kannada literatures Dasa sahitya. The poetic themes spread rapidly as part of the religious Bhakti movement that proposed an intensely personal form of devotion, following the philosophy of Ramanuja and opposing caste distinctions and other brahministic measures implicit in the theism of Adi Shankaracharya.
  • The literary movement was also marked by a shift from the classical language of Sanskrit , to the local languages Apabhramsha or derivatives, e. Rating details.
